Well to cover both those points.
the OP has spoken to the seller and got evassive and very unhelpful replies (and non replies)
Actually after glancing at that thread, it seems far more likely it's just typical egomania. In other words, "I am the best, the embodiment of perfection, I can do no wrong. Every action I have ever taken is completely right and/or utterly justified". People who live in their own world can be hard to deal with.

Dennis, I am sorry to hear about your situation, I am certain you'll win the case. I'm just pissed that you got robbed like this, I am sure you are furious. good luck.
I actually PM'd him when he posted that thread but got an offer from someone else for 200 1.8... this isn't fair for anyone.

Phil: do we know if the serial numbers match?
I also notice that the lens you sold him (in great condition) had a replacement RRS foot which can be seen in the 1 set of pics posted by the OP . But the 2nd set of the actual lens received by the OP has the standard foot.
Did you send the standard foot along with the RRS one ? But even then assuming the standard foot you had was in as good a condition as the rest of the lens (let's face it it would have been as it wasn't being used ) then when you look at the foot on the beaten up Lens you have to ask how it got in that state . And the images posted (of the mint lens) by the OP would indicate the seller (also known as SCUMBAG ) used the RRS foot for a while .
Just rambling but my gut says that's not the same lens . ...Show more →

I have assumed that Phil doesn't have the serial number of the lens he traded/sold to Gregory, and thus the dilemma.
That is why I have suggested to Dennis to check the fabrication codes, if those are available for Phil's lens, because the probability of Gregory owning two 200 f/1.8s which were made in the same month is very slim.

this amongst other reasons, is why I never, ever, ever, send paypal gift for a large ticket item, regardless of how much feedback someone has. Of course it is specially not fair to screw paypal out of a large ticket item. I know sellers at times have been screwed by unscrupulous buyers by going through paypal, and b/c of that, some refuse to take it, but for me, its just too much of a risk to take on a large ticket item.

If one compare the "beaten-up" picture of the original lens-foot on page 1 with the same picture from the original owner, both of them have the same scratch on the underside... which means, it is the same lens, gone from pristine condition to a beaten-up wreck in a year or so...
Looking at the link(s) Monito supplied earlier on, he even uploads tons of photos with his equipment piled up on the floor, in bags or in the seats of his car... it hurts just to look at those pics.. :-(
I think this case is pretty clear... first abuse and then fraud... :-(
Very sad to see people handle equipment like that... even sader of course lying about it... :-(

Phil and I just confirmed it's the same date code UH0911 and the scratch on the foot in his pic and the one I took the other day is still there. Unfortunately, that scratch has about 100 or so big brothers now
I'm definitely pissed that this happened but I'm confident PP and AMEX will handle this. And don't worry, I have zero plans of heading up to Canada to battle with Mr. Miaggi. I have better things to do. I think he's got bigger issues going on than just screwing me over.

Good man, Dennis, do not let all this poison your mood. You shall get your money back one way or another.
BTW, if you'd like to get a fine 300 f/2.8 IS MkI instead of 200 f/1.8, I am sure that a "Petkal" grade lens would help you forget this unfortunate episode.

I'm rooting for you too Dennis! As a fellow Bostonian, I hate to see anyone here get screwed like that. On the flipside, it's great to see the FM community band together like this to support your cause. You even got Fred involved! Good luck in dealing with this sad turn of event.
Hey, at least the 3+ft of snow we got last week are melting! Got to see the silver lining somewhere!

One thing of note. For someone that doesn't collect lenses but rather, shoots with them he sure takes a lot of pictures of that lens. It's downright fetish status.
