I dunno, back in film days, I would test a couple copies of a lens against each others to make sure there were no problems, and I also had a tech check the shutter on new bodies to make sure they were accurate. I do think that gear is more complex these days, so quality variation has more opportunities to creep in.

It's because of the communication explosion brought on by the internet. Everything now becomes a bitchfest (for good and bad). In the old days, we would write letters to the editor of camera magazines which never saw the light of day if they were critical of camera manufacturers.
