So do you have the issue with IE or Firefox? The adverts here are not heavy and the rest is rather static. A 2.8GHz C2D is rather old though. Perhaps a a second or two is normal.

When I pop open more tabs, the CPU percent for Chrome goes to around 60-70%. Firefox gets to about 60%. IE is about the same as Chrome. The CPU kicking up to those percents is the problem so I do have the issue independent of the browser.
Look in the Processes tab of the Task Manager and see what it is that's actually using all those CPU cycles. If it turns out to be some obscure DLL you can search on-line with that DLL name to make sure it isn't a bot or something and then DL a free resource tracker to see which applications opened it and what they're using it for. The whole thing may come down to uninstalling some little plug-in or something. Anyway, if it's bugging you it's only about a 1-hour job to track down the cause - afterwhich you can decide what to do about it.
Starsfeld: Oh my... a urban dictionary link to a word, reportedly submitted by a third grader, that shames all Mac users. I am offended, sir!
Bifucador: " YAMVPCT". I used to have issues like that when I used a PC. It's either a stuck Microsoft keyboard, or it's a code warning you that your PC will self-destruct in 5 seconds.

Yep, that's how I was monitoring it. Both the CPU and RAM usage of chrome.exe (or firefox.exe or iexplore.exe) skyrocket when opening tabs.
Right now I have an aging system, with a 2.5 YO 6-core extreme CPU, but other devices such as RAID controllers are newer and there are 44TB of direct storage. I'm waiting a bit for the 8-core Ivy Bridge-E CPUs in Q4 to refresh the system.

Really! I'm am working on stuffing those same things in an iMac. I may go to 10-core Ivy Bridge, but maybe upping the experience with a 50TB of indirect storage with a 3.0 YO on the side. Not sure now, but there's a good chance I might postpone this project for my next lifetime when I might have a better grasp on what you just said.
YO is "year old." Perhaps that was not in sufficient context.
It looks like the IMac has up to an i7-3770 now, although the CPU is not clearly identified. My problem with all-in-one devices of any kind is that when something malfunctions, everything is unusable.
Anyway, Macs use the same hardware as PCs for the most part since 2006, so the browser would be the limiting factor if all else is similar.

I reapplied thermal paste. It's been running hot for a while now. I guess when I browse the Buy/Sell forum and open up multiple tabs quickly, it does take extra processing power. It seems that other webpages behave similarly but I rarely open up as many other tabs as quickly than when I am on FM.
