I believe moose tend to be a bit cranky at times- especially if they're not habituated to people and you get too close.
My guess is partly because they are solitary animals except during the mating period, and because "loner" species must be more alert to dangers individually than herding animals- they are also more sensitive to a range of changing circumstances. (I'm just thinking out loud, here ).

I was on a dirt road in the park when I came upon the moose in #1.
I could have gotten closer, but I preferred standing back and using longer glass (400mm here), so as to not disturb the animal.
I was standing on the edge of the road, and he was feeding about 10 feet down the road embankment, among a tangle of bushes and fallen trees (a few years after the last great fire in Yellowstone).
He was eating fireweeds at the time, and had no interest in me.
