Went up to BC yesterday in hopes that the fog would lift. It did, eventually for a little while in the afternoon. Got a few images, but will need a return trip.
This is actually my favorite of the day. Long-eared owl sneering at us.

Yes, I still have the 300/2.8 II and the 2XIII. Pretty happy with the combo at the moment. I may get the new 500 down the line, but I want to see what comes out to replace the 7D-if anything?
The new 100-400 looks marvelous, but not sure it will have enough reach? If it does take the 2X pretty well—then—wow! I say!
P.S. I am enjoying the light load of my combo right now!!

It is the new 200-400, not 100-400. And with the built-in 1.4x TC, it will give you a 560mm f5.6. Not quite as much reach, but may be sharper than the 300 f2.8 with a 2x TC.

Right! I just auto wrote 100-400.
Not enough each—but maybe with a new 7D?
The 300/2X combo is actually very sharp—but one needs to get closer than what these images were—I am not sure I would have had anything better with my 500 and a 1.4 on. Light was bad, high ISO, not close.
For me it is a tradeoff—I sold my 800 and my 500/4 ver. 1 to get away from the weight-it is just no fun anymore. So it will be exciting to see what comes out this year. Probably never will be the perfect rig.

Any LEO is a great shot. And always like the SEO's esp. #3. What, no snowies? Or are they still to come. Was this at Boundary Bay? Don
Thanks! Well, there were some snowies, Don. But, they were at least 1/4 mile out towards the water--I saw three and no one is going off of the dyke anymore. Yes, Boundary Bay.
Hopefully there will be a better day of sun up there. These owl images are like 70% crops. Never really had a good go at them.
I saw on another forum a tremendous image of the same owl taken very early after sunrise. It was asleep by the time I got there.
