Went back to the batture late this afternoon to see what there was to see. Spotted a hawk off in the distance hunting just above the growth in the water. After some time , he came a bit closer. Not close enough to get the wonderful shots that you all post, but close enough to make my afternoon
Also found a red tail hawk.
500mm handheld , still trying to practice .
As always your nits, crits and suggestions are much appreciated.
Wouldn't it be easier if the harrier was the size of the ship? ....Very nice in flights and big congrats on your first harrier....funny about the going away shot....I have about 32gb of shots just like that
The sunset on the river is lovely...hope you didn't get too wet walking in the muck.
Eric
Excellent pics Birdie and congrats on your first Harrier pic. A male at that! Those Harriers gliding across the land are hard to get close for a pic, for me at least.
Well done Birdie. Congrats on the big H. Shooting is a progression for me:
1) See X, but maybe not get a shot at all.
2) Get a shot close enough to identify X.
3) Get a bunch of OK shots.
5) Get the killer shot.
And step 5 is a work in progress...
I enjoy #1 quite a bit. There's just a whisker too much negative space above the boat - just for the sake of amusement, I might try moving the bird down a bit to allow you to get more of a 3:2 crop but with the same space to the left and right.
I know that's a little taboo to be modifying the location of your subject like that, but I always like to experiment with my shots to see what better framing would have looked like.

Thanks Eric ! It would be much easier if they were larger and didn't move so fast I have soooooo many shots of whatever the subject looking the wrong way or moving away . All in the trial and error , right !
Not to worry, did not get too wet . Thanks again .

Best,

Thanks for the kind words Tom ! I wish they were excellent, but they were fun . I have never seen a harrier before these showed up.
Look on the bright side, the perched Red Tail Hawk is a superb shot with great eye contact.
Oh I do try and look on the bright side Glad you liked the red tail.

Thanks Ron ! In the hierarchy of progression what happened to 4 . Is that the step where you can't believe it is all coming together I keep bouncing between 1 , 2 and 3 !
As the object gets closer the speed of movement is increased 10x! Unpredictable movement is hard to be ready for Birdie but I see nothing wrong with what you have accomplished!
Not only a Harrier but the 'great Gray Ghost' himself appeared for you, how lucky is that girl Your away shot is also a good exposure, the white 'butt' is not on fire

Nice shots all around!
Thanks ! Tried your suggestion and moved the bird. Like it better

Good all around work. Nice BIF. But
Is this a photoshop thing? As you said, if the bird wasn't there than it isn't there. Confused.
