I'm conflicted -- I too wish it was the 35 IS -- I'd buy that in a second!
I was out yesterday with the original 28/2.8 and had a great time with it on 1D3. It is really a versatile focal length on all three formats. And the new one has great IQ (been re-reading the reviews to remind myself).
Vox -- Unlike you, I have the 28-135 IS and the 28-300L, and often wish I had a little faster lens at the wide end and also top imaging quality. (I got rid of my 28-105 some time ago -- just doesn't cut it, even on crop.)
I have the older model 28 and 35 right now and like them. Price is the only thing standing in my way.
But if I have to choose, the 35 IS will be more useful for me, coupled with my 24 TS-E for good range and IQ.
Arrrrrrggggg! Adorama -- I hate you! I love you!
