well, i headed to ottawa for 3 days this weekend to photograph this magnificent bird, the great gray owl. they normally live in northern and central canada, but in some years they come a bit further south and east. this shot made the 14-hour drive from boston > ottawa > boston well worth it (more shots are posted in the nature/wildlife forum). braving temps of -10F/-23C was easy with subjects like this. he's about 28 inches long with a wingspan of about 6 feet!
Wow!! Great timing indeed Dorian and a shot of a lifetime! Owls are hard to spot let alone get a good capture. I have only seen a few from a distance on the ground while driving down the drive at night. We often hear them at night but they rarely come out at day. Years ago I was at a local park and one of the Rangers had an owl on his arm. The owl had been injured in the wild somehow and it was being nursed back to health. I asked to get a picture.
no kidding, we have one that lives in our neighborhood, we can hear him at night, and he did a fly by one night as I was coming down the driveway on foot...but other than that, we never see it...I keep hoping to...
