I have purchased a tokina 16-28mm for my d800 and am wondering if a 100mm square ND filter (hand held against the hood) will vignette at 16mm. I know the diameter of the hood is about 92mm, but am not sure if the 100mm is enough to cover the corners. I am not interested in using a filter holder, I've always just hand held. Thanks very much!
I like filter questions and I think this one deserves a response although, personally, I can't provide any direct experience with this lens. I can say that I've shot with a 100mm square filter in a filter holder as the third filter out from a 17mm (non-bulbous) lens and that worked ok. I think your idea has a decent chance of working since the built-in hood doesn't appear to extend excessively far beyond the element however even if the coverage is ok, you'll have to find a way to block reflections onto the lens-facing side of the filter. Since you have the lens, you could probably check coverage with a cut 100mm square piece of paper.
In theory as long as you have it directly up against the lens hood there shouldn't be any vintaging because the filter is wider then the lens hood and it's at relatively the same distance away from the front lens element. As long as you don't bring the filter in front of the lens too far you should be good.
I don't own this lens, but the logic behind it makes sense.
Thanks for the replies. I don't have the lens yet (it has been shipped to me from the US), so I wanted to preemptively order a filter to save time. I suspect 100mm will be wide enough for about 18-19mm.
