Value is set by the market. If we consumers feel the price is too high, we don't buy it. Plenty of people bought the 5DIII body when the price was "outrageous". The realistic price, is the price the manufacturer can get for it. All the rest of the complaining is the same as arguing with the weather.
I sold off my 24-105 kit just in time! The value had already sunken but man oh man the market to sell them off will be even worse now. It brings the 24-105 IS to what I'd say is a fair value for it though. I always though it was horribly over-priced. If you want something super convenient and are OK with mediocre (for L) IQ but clearly better than the 28-135 IS and with more range, IS, much quicker focusing than than the Tamron 28-75 2.8 it makes sense at that price of $600 new.
