I would vote for the 85mm 1.4. However the 50mm 1.8 and the 85mm 1.8 are both very excellent, unless you need the 2/3 stop of light.

Congratulations on your new 85G. It is a great focal length for portraits. I don't own the latest and greatest at that length but the venerable 85 f/1.4D deserves its reputation as the "Cream Machine." For more formal portrait shooting I'm inclined to go with a 105mm lens but that can be a bit tight for casual shooting you describe. In fact, I do portrait work almost exclusively with MF glass which certainly isn't optimal for tracking kids running around the yard. Your 85 will handle that quite well.
