I like mine with TC 1.4x III; it seems the 200 1.8L has enough base quality that you can tell the difference between TC 1.4x II and III. Very happy. Also interested in the TC 2x III though not as excited because of the degraded quality I have read about. I wonder how it compares to the other 400mm lenses at similar apertures. Stan mentions it is slightly worse than the 400DO with his copy (not sure mark II or III TC). I wonder how it compares to the 400 F5.6 at similar aperture.... I think I will spend my $500 on something else like a surface pro for my LR4.

While it's not right for every situation, when it is right, nothing else will quite do as well, and now, in many situations, the 70-200 II is equal or even better. Nevertheless, this is not a lens I'll be parting with anytime soon. Some with and some without the 1.4 converter.

A favorite lens, without question. I'm always surprised how little field depth there is at these apertures when subjects are even slightly close. Truth is, I often find I should have worked at 2.8 are 3.2 to convey a sense of sharpness because the region that is in focus, tack-sharp as it is at 2.0, is surrounded by large regions of focus falloff. The out of focus regions are, though, always very beautiful.
Consider these examples of our favorite subjects, recorded late Oct 2012 at Nauset Beach, Cape Cod MA.

You certainly wouldn't.....those canines have been bred with one and only one purpose : to quickly dispatch wolves in any numbers served. Fiercely territorial and protective of their flocks.

Here is a gallery of 16 images I selected from a photo shoot from 2 months ago. they are all from the 200 f2 from 2.5 to f4 I think. I needed to shoot these with some more DOF than 2.0

These are some I posted in a similar thread on another forum many years ago from the
These are all with a 1DM2N, 200L f/1.8 w/TC1.4, f/2.5, 1/500, ISO1600. This is all far end court action, shot from the opposite end baseline. You can get a feel for how touchy the depth of field is, even at f/2.5.
The nicely background is what you pay for.
Drawing a foul... in action.
I can hold my breath longer than you.
Ahh!!!
That's mine.
I can fly!
Can't forget the cheerleaders.
Not a great picture... wish I was on the other end of the court, but this is a FOUL, baby!
