Trench, since you have the D7000 as well, do you feel that a crop-mode shot out of your D800 is on-par with shots out of your D7000? Put it another way: are you equally comfortable shooting DX out of your D800 as your D7000?
Look, I appreciate you answering my questions but a few weeks ago I had finally decided to make the responsible financial decision and skip the D800. You're making it very difficult for me.
Can someone please tell me that the D800 is, in fact, not a worthwhile upgrade and I should avoid it?
My bad...ya better 'hide me' I have many more positive threads on deck
It's quite possible the exclusive 1.2 crop mode, will blow your mind.
That AF-S 300 f4 of yours will absolutely sing on one...
Between D800 and D7000, which AF works faster in dim light like "dusk"?
I wanted to think AF on D800 is much better, but never tried D7000.
Having trouble AF lock on BIF in low light on my D800 with 300/2.8+1.7 set up. I wanted post this question in a new thread, but seeing all the experts like TM and others are here, why not try this. Thanks!

D800 does, Steve...hands down. May have to mess around with your settings to get the most out of the AF
in less than ideal light. I used both bodies at BdA last week before sunrise with my 200 f2 and TC-17E II...
the D800 jumped into focus lock noticeably faster. It's also true with a fast prime in the brewpubs shootin'
bands in the relative dark. When I had the 300 f2.8 VR I much preferred using the TC-14E II in less than
ideal light. Maybe give that a try and crop a bit if necessary.
Not sure what AF mode you're using, Steve, and I don't have a D800 but you might want to try reducing the number of AF points. If you're, say, using 51-point auto AF with 3D tracking, you're asking the camera to do a lot more than if you drop it down to 9 or 21 points... you might have more success when the AF is already struggling.
I know my D300 works better with my 300/4 + 1.7 if I use single point AF or at least drop it down a bit. Obviously, that's in addition to the normal things like trying to locate the most contrast on your subject.
Thanks TM for advice and suggestion. I'm sure AF will be faster and better. But I'm always hungry for reach. How about D7000+300, would this combo get better result?
I think I'll get my hands on a TC-14EII soon.

I use 21 point AF with 3D tracking. Single point AF isn't going to work with BIF. I'm talking about just before and after Sunset hour, when there's not much contrast at all. I'm pushing to F4.8(max with 1.7TC) with max ISO setting to 8000, still don't get fast enough shutter speed to freeze BIF.
I'm trying to remember if I had better result with Canon 7D+300+1.7 combo.
for me that dynamic and 3d tracking doesn't work well unless you have only sky behind you. I use single point continuous servo, using the AF-ON button for all my in flight, and it works good.

Not every sensor picks up the iridescence like this
Since you are SOOC, are you using any custom Picture Control settings? I endeavor to get as close as possible to SOOC but still find myself behind the computer more that I want to be.
Yeah, Trey. I played around the 1st 1000 shots or so...got it where I wanted then
went to work on setting up b6 so "0" is indeed zero.
Added horse pic histo...
Had my D800 for a couple of weeks now and just about getting used to it, the weather has been awful since buying it but have managed a few that I like.
