I'd guess you're right about the musth. The secretions below his eye are a good clue. And the fact that he's had his tusks sawed off indicates that when he's horny he gets cranky. Since the other elephants can't run from him, separating the big guy is probably all the caretakers could do.

Thanks, Charlie. I was testing an old Nikkor 400mm f3.5 lens. Hence the tight crops. And, as you can imagine, I was a good distance off too. This is one HUGE hunk of glass that's as sharp as it can be wide open. These are Ilford XP2 Super, a C-41 b&w film.
Thanks, Scott. If I am correct in my assertion that this male is in musth, it's, apparently, a common expression. I've seen other videos of males in musth and they all do this to one extent or the other. I'm gonna go back down there and shoot these elephants again; by Texas standards, it's close to home: only 90 miles.
