I agree, looks fine without it Mark. On a side note, it's a good idea to clone out skin blemishes (the non-permanent type) before applying any HDR, since it really makes those things blossom on the screen.
IMHO the HDR brings out to much contrast here - it makes the shirt look like it's been on the dirty laundry pile and he just put it on to play - also seems to bring out to many of the skin blemishes.
I do think going forward you could use it in select areas of a photo - eg the ball
Also note that your blue is lighter in the HDR.
Overall nice clean poster, I like the background fade to the bottom
I'm a huge fan of the HDR look but I've found that, given the option, most parents prefer the straight image to the HDR. I think your sample image looks great either way, but it's really all about what sells ...
