p.1 #1 · Backyard birds in North Carolina, taken with new Canon 500 mm f4
Hello FMers,
This is my very first post here, although I have long admired the incredible pictures that have been posted here.
I thought some of you might be interested in another preliminary, real-life user report on the new Canon 500mm f4 IS II lens. If so, read on ...
Tuesday morning my new Canon 500mm f4 IS II lens arrived, and at noon I took it out for a test spin. I put the lens on my 7d, mounted the whole shebang on a tripod with gimbal head, then sat on my backyard deck with a camouflage burlap over me and the camera.
I was approximately 20 feet from some metal bird feeders, perhaps 30 or 40 feet from the trees where the cardinals and junco perched, and probably about 40 feet from a platform feeder.
I'm showing the originals along with the crops, to give an idea of how much cropping was done.

Hi Everybody,
Thanks for all the kind words. It's nice hearing from you all.
I'm looking forward to a long and happy relationship with the new lens. So far it seems to be everything I hoped it would be. I can't wait to try it out on some BIFs.
Happy shooting,
Dennis B.
