p.2 #1 · Getting D3s dialed in for HS Hoops

Great shots...

The only time I use Auto ISO is when I'm shooting outdoors and it's not evenly lit. I use it a lot for short track racing as the overhead lights do not evenly cover the race track. Since I'm using much slower shutter speeds since I'm doing a lot of panning I've actually found most of my shots are a lower iso than I'd have dialed in manually. The beauty is that when I need a faster shutter for a wreck or something the camera will up the iso for me and I don't have to think.

AUTO ISO is a really valuable tool to have in your hip pocket. No doubt about that. I typcially shoot AUTO ISO for night-time football and soccer. I have used it for basketball in some of the darker gyms where the floor is noticably darker in some spots than others. Have to say that after shooting without it for this game, I feel the camera did a much better job of getting exposure right.

Nice set Rick, looks like the iso stayed the same anyway, love the buzzer shot

I may have to try this locked down ISO I keep reading about (kidding.... )

Real nice set and its getting pretty obvious your comfy with your new toy. Love the action, #8 yes is the winner for me. Love the comp and sharpness you got out of it!

Definitely like the crops where you included the defenders facial expressions. Very nice balance of angles as well!

Mako, Great to hear from you. Thanks for saying something about the defenders. I always am tempted to crop really really tight, but sometimes the faces of the player who was beaten on defense or who is fouling the shooter adds a whole new layer to the photos. Glad you pointed that out.

Thanks. Yep, locked that ISO down at 5000 and let 'er rip. Really pleased with the D3s. It is a monster. Buzzer shot will be in the school's post-season slide show for sure.

I really like the pictures and it looks like you have a sound understanding of photography
