This was from the end of November in Badwater in Death Valley. There was a nice layer of clouds to color up that morning. I shot these at an area where the polygons are still in the uplift motion rather then the crusted over edges that I normally go for.
Jim,
A lovely image as usual. The subtle colors as Fred mentioned, the beautiful sky as others stated and leading lines that the crusts created make for a great image.
Hummm.. Nice one going!
Shall we expect some more series of photos from Death Valley which I am sure you took at the same time?
I like the orange color reflected to the polygons as well..

Hi Maji,
Thanks so much. The coloring of the foreground is always one of the decisions when processing the file that can be a tough one. I have done some in the past where I changed the WB for the ground so that the salt flats were pure white, and they made for a really cool dynamic contrast, but with this one I chose to leave it closer to the WB of sky.

Hey Kee,
Yeah, I got some cool shots that trip, a few more cool ones from before dawn, and then some out at the Devil's Golf Course from that morning. But I have been sitting on them for a while because right about the time I went there a bunch of others went there, and there was a whole slew of cool DV shots. I thought I would wait a bit so hopefully no one would get bored with another DV submission...
That's a very beautiful sky! I love how the color is reflected very naturally on the salt. It's difficult to pull off very natural shots there since the light can do strange things when it hits the salt. I'm looking forward to heading back there in a few weeks -- I plan on checking out my super secret part of badwater where the salt is always nice. :-)
Amazing shot Jim! The the warm colors of the salt flats due to the sunrise is a very refreshing take on this location. I've have done a couple shots where I decided to go with a cooler WB to emphasize the salt, but the warmer WB really gives it the natural look of being there. The orange-y and magenta-y tones really make the foreground pop
