I sent the lens back after about a weeks testing, feeling thoroughly dissillusioned with it all.
Not sure if something is inherently bad with the 7D+600 II combo... i've not seen many people that use it as they tend to use 1D's with the lens. I'm a birder in the UK though so i wanted the pixel density of the 7D.
Interesting. I do not have as much experience with 7D on long lenses, and I intend to keep it that way.
However, the AF performance of the 7D + 600 II + 1.4xTC MkIII setup was much worse than I would have expected it on stationary targets. Neither 1DMkIIN nor 1DsMkII exibit such deficient response, although they are not as nimble as 1DX.
The MkII supertelephoto lenses are still relatively new, and it is not impossible that some lens/TC combos do not work well with some cameras.
When I get around it I'd like to test 7D on 500 II + 1.4xTC, and see how that goes. What I do know already is that 7D works very well with 800L on stationary targets.

Out of curiosity, could you post the non-cropped version of that mallard in flight? I'm interested in seeing how much you cut out. The IQ looks great.
Sorry, Jared, I can not post the original frame because it identifies the shot location.

So you didn't try your 600 II with another camera first?
Yep i tried it with my 1Dmk2N and it was rubbish compared to the 500 still, though better than the 7D.
Could hear the AF twitching around on servo on both cameras on a still, flat target where as the 500 would be rock solid. Same results on single AF too.

That's really sad, given how long these things were coming and the absurd prices.
I'm thinking of getting the 500 II, but could offset its cost with my 500 I, to soften the blow.
I too have a 7D and the 600 II. I've not been overly happy with that combo. And that's without the 1.4x. It's not too bad but for the price of the new 600, it really should be friggin' fantastic. There seems to be a bit of focus hunting going on. Lately I've been using a 5D Mark III, 600 II and the 1.4x. That seems to work much better. The lens has been confirmed to be within specs by Canon. Oddly enough, the 7D works brilliantly with my 300 2.8 and the 1.4x. YMMV.
Henrik, I am glad to hear that your experience is similar to mine......try 7D + 600 II with the 1.4TC III, and you will see what pathetic AF really is.
In my view, if you could possibly afford any of the 1D series cameras (or 5DMkIII), there is very little reason to bother with 7D, except its extreme pixel density may come handy on long range shots, and I will continue to use 7D for shooting distant stationary targets with 800L, in good light.

You could always "black out" the rest of the photo; it would still illustrate the degree to which the image was cropped Or just a rough % guess...
