I know that the 17-40 takes a couple different lens hoods to block the sun better on 1.6x bodies.
I have the 17-35 and the hood is pointless on my 60d.
The 17-40 takes the 83J from a 17-55 which is much bigger and probably better.
Not sure if it will fit a 17-35 though.
Im wondering if there are any others that may fit it.
83dii? from 24mm
83J? from 17-55mm..
etc
Even the largest hoods are ineffective at reducing flare from a strong light source--e.g., sun--just out of frame. I've found using my cap or even hand works better than a lens hood. You can buy a shade on a gooseneck called the "Flare Buster." It mounts in the hotshoe and can be adjusted to block a streetlight or troublesome sun. I prefer just using my hat. Canon's hoods are mainly useful for keeping rain and hard objects from hitting the front element.

Yea I keep mine on a lot just in case of bumps too.
The original hood just doesnt protect it at all.
Flare on my copy seems to be very well controlled.
I like the size of the 17-55 hood, but dont know whether it will mount correctly or cause vignetting.
Might just get one off amazon for $5 and return it if it doesnt fit.
Just went ahead and bought an EW-83J for it off amazon for $6.
The 17-35 hood is supposed to fit the 17-40, and the 17-55 fits the 17-40.
So it has to work. I hope.
Used to use a 50mm hood on my Nikon 35. So sometimes oem lens hoods can be small. Don't forget cheap rubber hoods. Should be able to trim them if needed
