Hi all, I know that Nikon claims the D7000 will only autofocus reliably with F5.6 or brighter lenses attached. I have read reports though that this is done to cover their ass, and it can autofocus with smaller max apertures in decent lighting. I am curious, has anyone tried the new 70-200 F4 or the older 300mm F4 with the 2xTCIII to test autofocus? I am especially curious about abilities with the 70-200/F4 + 2xTCIII shooting at 400mm F8..... thanks for any info!

I use the 1.7x on my 300/4 and it worked pretty well in good light. W/ a 2.0x it's not so good. Slow and iffy on focus lock.
Now one of the newer bodies it would be fine as they can focus to f/8 in the center points.

Thanks for your reply David. When shooting the 300/4 +1.4TC what is the wide open aperture? F6.3?
If I got a D600 and put the 300/4 + 2xTCIII on it, that could make for a very cool setup for decent light, but what I'd really like is a D7100 with F8 AF capabilities added to the lineup!!
Whoops sorry that was a typo on my part...I meant to ask what is the wide open aperture with the 1.7TC? I know it is F5.6 with 1.4xTC and F8 with 2xTC so curious where the 1.7 comes in...

I just got the new Nikon 70-200 F4 AF-S VR and attached it to my D7000 with the 2X TCIII. Went outside, mid day but heavy overcast, and autofocus seemed pretty dang quick to me. It locked onto near and far targets very fast with little doubt as long as there was some contrast.
Sounds like the 300 F4 AF-S is iffy at best with the 2X TCIII (I have never shot with that lens)....maybe the newer tech in the 70-200 F4 is a help? Don't know and need to do some testing on moving targets like birds in flight, but so far I am pretty impressed as I thought I might get very little AF response at all with this combo. Haven't downloaded the shots to pixel peep sharpness though I'm sure it'll be decent considering the naked lens' performance.
I use the 300 f4 af-s with the tc17e and it focuses fine in good light with good subject contrast. When I first got mine it was back focusing considerably, so I had to adjust that. Strange, since the 300 alone, and all my other lenses for that matter, require no adjustments. If you dot all your i’s and cross all your t’s its really quite sharp at f8.
