That's written on a lot of shampoo bottles.

Maybe, the Mayan's were just smart enough to know when to repeat something without needing to write it down in the instructions ... i.e. just hose it off and use it again.

Woo-Hoo ... lots of time for more alt pics.

i'm pretty sure it was more like: "meh, that's enough for today. we'll fill in those extra years later, it's not like our civilization is going to collapse tomorrow. let's go take some pictures instead."

I'm thinking it was more like, "Well, that's longer than any of us are going to live. Hey, isn't it time for a ritual sacrifice? Who's virgin daughter is on deck today?"

Carsten, the EU is such a treasure trove of urban riches. It's just no fair. Great stuff, I especially liked the second one.

Maybe one year I'll be able to fly out for the FM Berlin (pending any future apocalypses and if you don't mind a Yank barging in on your fun

You are very welcome to join us! These weren't in Berlin though, but around Dortmund. Note that Detroit has some of the most awesome urbex spots in the world.

You wouldn't catch me exploring Detroit, not without some sort of firearm at least!

I don't know, that might just give you a false sense of security. About 10 years ago, in a rather "safe" neighborhood in Los Angeles, I got out of my car in the parking lot of a restaurant, and there was a man waiting for me who immediately aimed his .45 at my face, had me put my hands up, turned me around, put the gun to my head, patted me down against the car, took my belongings, and then stole the car. All the while, he kept telling me that he was going to "f-ing kill me" over and over again. I feel lucky to make it through that ordeal, and, as a handgun owner myself, I feel very fortunate not to have my gun on me at that time, because things would have likely gotten ugly.

The funny thing is, I spent 10 years driving into pretty bad parts of downtown Los Angeles at night for band rehearsals, and I never had an issue. Only in a nice part of town. Doh!

Come to think of it, I was sitting in my car in an alley downtown one time, because I arrived at rehearsal early, and an L.A.P.D. car zoomed up, told me to get out of the car, and then forced me against a wall to pat me down, because they had a report of a man with a gun in the area. I wasn't upset, as they were just doing their job, although I'm pretty glad I didn't have my handgun with me at that time, too!

Crap, I don't want to turn this into a political thread. Just want to share an anecdote.

I don't know anyone with a handgun, nor anyone who's been held up at gunpoint.

Ditto. The proliferation of guns problem is pretty much limited to the States and former war nations at this point. Most western nations have guns under tight control. This doesn't 100% guarantee that gun club members don't get their hands on weapons outside of clubs and go nuts, and we can have events like what happened in Norway or Germany, but in the States the problem is just so much worse. It doesn't seem like there is a good solution out there, just a variety of bad and worse ones. The worst one is to do nothing, because then the problem will also be there in the future.

Carsten, the previous one is a a tremendous set! 1,2,3 and the last are my absolute, wall-hanging, jaw-dropping favorites!
Let me follow with a couple of seaside shots so that a good breeze clear out the stifling urbex atmosphere...

And when the Americans eventually need to defend themselves against the tyranny of their government, what will the rest of the world say then?

Look at the poor Brits. They idly stood by while their government disarmed them and now they have to hunt with bloody pellet rifles. Meanwhile, their government watches every move the citizens make ("1984" ?) and corruption is rampant, from the highest levels right down through to the police. How will the Brits defend themselves as this continues?

It is a mess. The gun owners of the United States of America are the very least of my global worries.

Reminds me quote from Lord of war - "There are over 550 million firearms in worldwide circulation. That's one firearm for every twelve people on the planet. The only question is: How do we arm the other 11?"

And that is, in current state of mankind, very good question. Only people with guns are free people. People without guns are just potential victims. As many cases around the world show.

Yeah, and its the "advanced" civilization that got all worried @ figuring out why it "stopped" when it did.

it seems like everybody that actually studied the mayan calendar got it. it's just that people like to look for the impending apocalypse. there's the whole issue of leap years that the mayans didn't account for too. the mayans would have had to reset their calendars a few times between their fall and now for the last day of the calendar to fall on the winter solstice, otherwise it would have ended this past summer i think.

Well, I think the environs in the EU vs. US are (or can be) totally different, so we each look at what eachother has access to and start dreaming of what could be

Not that I wouldn't have a blast in Detroit, but yeah... I currently live in the 8th most dangerous city in the US and I wouldn't be too keen on probing the darkest areas of the Motor City.
