You wouldn't catch me exploring Detroit, not without some sort of firearm at least!
I don't know, that might just give you a false sense of security. About 10 years ago, in a rather "safe" neighborhood in Los Angeles, I got out of my car in the parking lot of a restaurant, and there was a man waiting for me who immediately aimed his .45 at my face, had me put my hands up, turned me around, put the gun to my head, patted me down against the car, took my belongings, and then stole the car. All the while, he kept telling me that he was going to "f-ing kill me" over and over again. I feel lucky to make it through that ordeal, and, as a handgun owner myself, I feel very fortunate not to have my gun on me at that time, because things would have likely gotten ugly.
The funny thing is, I spent 10 years driving into pretty bad parts of downtown Los Angeles at night for band rehearsals, and I never had an issue. Only in a nice part of town. Doh!
Come to think of it, I was sitting in my car in an alley downtown one time, because I arrived at rehearsal early, and an L.A.P.D. car zoomed up, told me to get out of the car, and then forced me against a wall to pat me down, because they had a report of a man with a gun in the area. I wasn't upset, as they were just doing their job, although I'm pretty glad I didn't have my handgun with me at that time, too!
Crap, I don't want to turn this into a political thread. Just want to share an anecdote.
