The angle adds dynamism.
The deep lines, brought to black, add depth and are effective.
Yes to the processing. But it doesnt sustain enough interest for me.

Thanks Scott,
Everything but the hook to catch a viewer
I think you have lots of company in the lack of interest category. Me too - swept away by my fondness of diagonal lines.
I would be attracted to this as well but I know I would not be able to make an effective composition. Tho only thing I could suggest is try shooting it with a macro lens, focusing on the more interesting parts of the branch but of course this will create additional challenges. You may create a very interesting abstract.
Ok, I don't really have any background in art, so this is simply my opinion on the subject, which may be completely wrong.
An abstract, in my mind, should not give me a definite form or shape I can relate to, it should let my mind play with the image and come with answers of it's own... this image you posted is definitely an image of a piece of wood, so my mind sees it and thinks "piece of wood", instead of wondering "what is this abstract about?".
Perhaps a tighter shot from some detail? I don't really have an answer; I tried to take some part of the image and make it as abstract as I could just to illustrate what I mean:
(I can actually see a red fox resting over a fallen/cut tree in this image... go figure, perhaps I forgot to take my medicine today )
