p.1 #1 · NEW 24-70 F2.8 L Lens

I ran across this forum by way of reading some posts on the Luminous-Landscape site and thought I would share the following...Last week on assignment in Montreal, Canada I went into the shop ImageLink on St. Catherine Street. They have a big Canon stock and the owner of the store showed me a photo of the new 24-70 F2.8L that will be anounced at Photokina. Size appears to be the same as the 28-70 and sorry, no IS. The 24mm addition is nice now if they could lengthen it to 85 or even 105...well, I can dream! Also mentioned by the manager but not seen in pix was that Canon will be expanding the implementation of their DO technology to their existing line-up of long glass. Perhaps its still a bit premature to think of that 2lb. 600mm F 4, but I am sure it means great things for the sports and wildlife guys!

I've been drooling over the 28-70 f/2.8L for some time now. It would fill a large gap in my collection VERY nicely... but if Canon is coming out with a new 24-70 then maybe people will sell off their 28-70's to get the new one (kinda like people selling the 17-35 to get the 16-35)... that means better pricing.... hmmmmmm

I do hope this rumor is true and that Canon will be getting these lenses out right away. I have wanted the 28-70 for quite some time but did not want to spend the money on one because I have a 28-135 IS and that already covers the focal length. I recently tried a 28-70 on my D60 in a local shop and was surprised at how much better it focused and exposed than the 28-135 IS. Totally different lenses! My 28-135 is nice and sharp but the constant f2.8 and the contrast of the 28-70 made me really want to add/replace my 28-135. I missed the rebate while it was offered and have found a couple of 28-70's used on this forum but they have been going for almost the same price as a new one at B&H. With so many rumors of a new lens I decided to wait like I did with the D60. Waiting is tough but sometimes I can get away with it if I can get the job done with my existing equipment.

As soon as I know if there is a replacement or not I can finally order something. I don't know how much IS is needed on this short focal length so that won't hold me back.

No reason not to believe Bibikow (Walter) but this is the Internet and it is his first post so I will wait and see what happens next week.

Thanks for the heads up Walter!

We have also had reports here of someone using an actual 9mp camera. Then the leak of the 11mp came out. Sometimes I think they mislead us on purpose.

Hi -- I'm surprised at no IS -- as I intend getting the 1DS the 24-70 doesn't really want to make me get rid of my very nice 28-70 'L' thankyou..
I'm really surprised at this announcement because of the full frame sensor size increasing the Lens at the wide angle end doesn't seem to me to make much sense --- now increasing the 70 to say 105 or 135 and especially adding IS IMHO would have made a much better option

Seems to me Canon have got two ends of the strand working against each other here.

So --sorry guys (and gals) all wanting a cheap 28-70 --I'm keeping mine.

BTW finally stock market seems to be working again at long long last--might be able to afford 2 1DS later so anyone wanting used D60's watch this space as I'm on 2 lists for 2 of these.
I've found by bitter experience having two totally different bodies on a shoot doesn't cut it when you are using 1 for backup. Taking 2 different bodies for different jobs is fine but as backup -- you have too many variables to change and you don't usually have time.
Other than that the D60 has been the most fun camera I've had for a long long time (and it makes me money too!,

Yep I am waiting for IS versions as well. I simply love my 70-200L IS lens and now I am inbetween the 35-350 and the 100-400. If only the 35-350 has IS and was 2.8, it would be a no brainer for me. I wish Canon would make either the 35-350 or the 100-400IS lens 2.8. I shoot a lot of Highschool football at night and the range and F stop would certainly help me. Maybe Canon will make a 100-400 DO/IS 2.8 lens, now that would be killer for me.

Would a 200-400 DO IS 4.0 also do ? Just wait and see.

But why should Canon be worrying about IS for a Lens that caps out at 70mm?

200mm I can see, but 24-70? WHat are you attempting to shoot candids at dusk?
:-)

Good heavens. What do we desire to see next a 50mm F/1.4 IS lens? I mean that lens needs so much stabilization after all.

Now if they get me a a 200mm F/2.8L with IS I would see a need and be happy.

And of course a 500mm F/2.8 DO IS :-)

I went to that store (in Montreal) and I was confirmed that the new 24-70 2.8 will be released and the price will be the same as the current price for the 28-70 2.8.

Personally, I would preferred the lens to be a 28-105 2.8 instead of 24-70 2.8.
I currently owned 17-35, 28-70,70-200 2.8 + 50 1.4 and 2 other prime L lenses. Most of the time, I mounted the 28-70 for the wedding shots. I found it too shot at 70mm and I often have to switch to the 70-200.

Anyway, we will see how the new lens perform against the old one.

Mark,

If you have ever worked with the 28-135 IS you will know what IS brings even in the wider range. It is just great to do available light photography stopped down to get DOF or gaining optical quality, at speeds until about 1/10 sec. And yes indeed, a 50 mm / 1.4 IS would be great too. But I guess it would lose a lot of its 'transparancy' as the addition of the IS elements would interfere with the nice 'pure' Gaussian (optical symmetric) design of this lens that is the 'secret' behind its top notch optical performance.

BTW: good chance we are going to see that 500 DO IS soon.

KR,

Peter
