I had only been shooting manual exposure for about 20 min. and was still playing with getting my shots and adjusting by looking at the histogram… also shooting in bright light… still morning but bright sun… but those were the conditions I want to correct… f/22 and such.
I got better at adjusting by the of my shooting around 1pm…
The shots I got at turn one and turn 6 & 7 did not need much in the way of cropping. I really didn’t get to see my shots until after I got home around 2:30pm… (Stopped off at Stonewalls BBQ for lunch), and imported to Lightroom.
That shoot was a chance to learn to shoot in “M” and I got my exposure off the object I was shooting and the camera was not fooled into opening up the aperture…
I’m going to edit those shots down in size so it won’t be as obvious…
I think manual exposure mode is the way to go…

I won't get too long winded, not really the Photo Crit section, and I don't want to get too off topic...I think I figured out what is causing the noise in the shadows, and I don't think it is the crop that caused it. From the image you posted I could almost replicate it by bringing up the shadows with the shadows/highlights slider, then an unsharp mask on the whole file produced that IQ loss. Personally, I don't think your exposure on the original is off, in fact, shooting M actually let you chose the exposure, and not the camera metering on the dark side and over exposing the rest of the image. That is what it prevents, more than shooting at f/22...sometimes you will get that tiny aperture if you are shooting slow. Anyway...I think there is a way to edit it that can bring up your shadows a little, and not sacrifice the IQ...
how did you process this? The X3 in the background looks real funky with that edge around it, just like all the highlighted edges on the other bikes. Almost like what I have seen happen when highlights are pulled down too much and shadows lifted too much against that.
