The front page for ESPN had a grunge, worn crackle effect to it. I took a screenshot since I didn't know how long it would still be there.

Mark, looks like they just overlaid 2 or 3 concrete and/or metal textures (often in Overlay or Soft light blend mode) and faded some images in, blending it all together with custom brushes.

If you have an iPad or a Mac you can get something similar with an app called Snapseed. The effect is actually call grunge.

Kevin, I will look into something similar to Snapseed. I am a PC user though.

You can reduce the saturation and increase clarity or definition and it will give a similar feel...add some film grain/noise and there you go. The look was really popular when the movie 300 came out.
