Oh, one other tip, spot meter on the kid's face and let the rest go where it will. I can't stand wide stage shots with the faces all blown out.

Schools vary a lot in lighting. You are right to start with what you have. Take a normal zoom and your flash for after concert snaps.... All the Nikon 80-200 2.8s have good glass....
