I almost wish I would opt out for a 200/2VRII, no matter how much it would cost me.
Maybe it's just me but I am so used to the VRII that the VRI just depressed me...
I couldn't get a sharp photo at 1/60 or hek, sometimes even at 1/100 the image was blurry from motion!
I mentioned this issue to the Nikon repair center, to make sure they check if the VR works properly.
Like I said, maybe it's just me too spoiled with my previous 70-200VRII...
I know it's 2.5 stops vs 4 stops but come on, 1/100 shot blurry? My hands are not shaky either.
I had sharp shots at 1/8 on my VRII. ...Show more →
I think you indeed, got spoiled by the VRII
Don't worry, I got the same results like you the first week I got the VR1. But don't give up, it's normal.. you are on honeymoon phase. This lens requires lots of practice. LOTS OF PRACTICE. Also some long lens technique.
When I had my VR1, I turned the VR OFF 99% of the time and learned to nail shots without the help of VR.
Remember that this is like 1st gen VR (same era as the old 80-400) and it's indeed klunky.
Turn the VR OFF on all your lenses and start learning to shoot without it. Your handholding technique will improve a lot. Also if you're using Auto ISO, set it so that the auto shutter speed is on the Max setting.

I've photographed over 60 weddings in my lifetime, so the hand-holding technique has been mastered
I'm not complaining that if I don't have VR, my life is over.
I was simply asking whether the VR worked or not since I had blurry shots at 1/100, as opposed to 1/8 on VRII.
Found it strange that my VRII was sharp at 1/8 and the VRI was blurry sometimes at 1/100...
I can totally survive without VR, BUT sometimes at weddings, it is a life saver.
Just wondering what I'd be losing optically by picking up a 200/2 AI compared to the modern G lenses (obviously VR and AF).
Wide open sharpness and contrast?
Been waiting on my chubby for nine days now. DEPRESSING!
Meanwhile, just thought i'd mention something: Lisa Holloway is the primary member on here that inspired me with her fantastic images, which led me to buying a chubby.
She says her most used lens is the (Canon) chubby. Indeed, looking at most of her images, they all look like they're taken at 200/2.
If I can get one of my daughters to stand in for a few portraits today I will upload shots taken with both the 200f2 ai-s and 200f2 vr1.
I can say right now though that sharpness and contrast does favor the vr1, though every portrait taken thus far of the girls with the older ai-s version has been liked more. Something about how the extra bit of soft and dreamy look they favor vs the razor sharpness of the vr1 that shows every pore of their skin. kaiserkudo wrote:

Lisa Holloway is a whole different level with the can chub. If there is anyone who's had a calling it's gotta be her and photography. If I remember correctly she just kinda decided to take photos and eventually just liked a chub. But the images off the bat were just amazing. Great skills attracts such clientele. Never get tired of seeing her work. She literally spanks even the big names.

I could not agree more her work is outstanding and inspiring.

You don't just "eventually like the chub" just like that.
How can you do that when the chub has an insane hefty price tag of 5.7k?
By that time, she became very good at what she does and had plenty of clients pay her in order for her to even afford that chub.
I want to pull off similar (non wedding) shots like she does; nature creamy and bokehlicious stuff with kids & people.
I'll probably definitely fail but eventually I want to get there
