I think that what is eye-catching about this image is, indeed, the broken glass and there simply isn't enough of it in the lower image. I really like the top version better for that reason. If you felt you wanted to crop it, I would trying bringing up the bottom edge of the frame until it is almost at the bottom of the ledge on the left hand side... it makes it a much more landscape aspect ratio, but it really focuses the attention on the broken & cracked glass.
camboman - glad you like and I'm honored to be likened to Man Ray. he and Lee Miller (who actually did more of the solar work) are certainly an inspiration.
