p.1 #1 · AFS 80-200 f2.8 and TC14 results?

Anyone getting good sharp images wide open at f4 with this combo?

Mine are awful; need to stop down to f5.6. I don't think it's the lens since it was serviced by KEH just last year. Perhaps a crappy TC?

Anyone?

I have not done it in a while (like a year), but yes I get pretty good sharpness with this combo wide open and my now sold D700. Using it wide open with the TC20EIII the results were not so great . . .

Dennis, there IS sample variation with all the TC's.

Most guys I know buy several copies (used) and keep what works best for a specific lens/body combo.
Fine tune may be your best friend here, so don't give up all hope of sharp wide open...tho you'll see it
more frequently with a prime OR the 70-200 VR II

Thanks for stoppin' by, John and Will.

It's wierd. This TC14 is just fine with primes, but for whatever reason, it doesn't play well with the 80-200 zoom. Go figure.

Good idea, Will, about fine tune. As I understand, fine tuning a zoom is a balancing act.
