p.1 #1 · Hoya HD vs. S-HMC

In the past I've always bought Hoya Super Multi-Coated UV filters.

Now there's HD (or even HD2).

Marketing hype or noticeable difference between the two ? Best sticking to the S-HMC at half the price ?

Some folks find Hoya filters to be difficult to clean without streaking, so the HD coating are better for their streak resistance. On the other hand, they are very slightly less transmissive (99.35%) compared to the S-HMC (99.7%).

oh boy 0.35% difference.

actually the HD has been around for over 2 years. I have one of their polarizers. quite good too.

Another reason : I need to order a 52mm and 67mm, and B&H are out of stock of the HD2 and only have the EVO or HD which are discontinued.

So I think I'm am just going to go for the EVO...

The HD is pretty much the same as the HD2. They came up with the HD2 to help control the trade of gray market merchandise. If they're selling the HD filters for a decent price point, that's what I would go for.

I have a couple of S-HMCs and it is pretty low profile compared to B+W or Hoya HD. No difference in performance (UV as well as CPL) for me anyway.
