I've been taking pictures of kids sports photography for about a year now and the parents approached me about making sports cards, team photos, individual shots, etc. Is there a software to do this OR should I go through another company?

Hi and welcome to FM!
What company are you currently using?
Is there a software? I don't do these type of cards/team photos...etc, but I know most people use PS.
There are many software programs, there are many template companies, there are online templates through some of the print houses for cards and magazine covers, and there are programs that allow you to create the things yourself. It all basically falls upon what your skill level and/or time allows you to do. Some people are very talented at creating templates, some people can pick it up very quick, others buy pre made templates and put the images in, others upload the photos to labs and let the labs take care of everything.
I would be willing to do some designs per compensation. I'm currently working in the athletic department at UC Davis and do designs for our football team. Everything I do is all custom from background to text effects, no templates. Let me know.
I am not sure what specifically you are asking about. If you are asking about general software needed for more serious post processing... There is pretty much a core suite of software that every photog is going to need.
Lightroom/Aperture
Photoshop
Noise Reduction Software such as Noise Ninja or Noiseware
Portrait Professional is great for portrait touchups
OnOne Perfect Resize is great for enlarging portraits for posters.
