Those OOF highlights are caused by mirror box clipping and there's nothing you can do about it. It's not poor lens design, but something all ultra-fast lenses will have issues with wide open. It's a camera limitation. Needs a bigger mirror box.

"So people have a choice, pay more for a canon with nicer bokeh or get the cheaper sigma which is probably sharper. Who loses?"
Absolutely right. Now I understand creamy bokey is important for some photographers but it isn't for everyone, speaking entirely subjectively personally I am interested in sharpness/control of corner coma at f1.4 on objects I am focused on, we are not all OOF fetishists (nothing wrong if you are of course). If the Sigma is really good at sharpness/corner coma at or near wide open then it would be mighty attractive particularly at a sensible price.

Sigma invented a lens that produces bad Bokeh at every opportunity it gets.
Canon's 35mm is one of my favorite lenses and that lens is a master of good bokeh. It's a real shame Sigma messed up the bokeh on lens who's reason for existing at least for me is bokeh.
You think it fair to slate a lens you don't own based on one image that you have no idea has been processed? Looks like you are justifying your Canon L from a fanboy standpoint.

Come, come, now that's not fair..
Legion5's painstaking analysis of the bokeh of this new Sigma has convinced me that I should in fact buy a used Canon 35mm 1.4L.
Perhaps I'll buy the one that Legion5 himself is currently selling:

I would prefer an expensive (old or new) 35L with wonderful bokeh over any sigma 35 f1.4 with so-so bokeh.

I think the Sigma will be a great and fast 35mm lens. All that talk about it's bad bokeh from a lot of people here that don't even have seen or used the lens have be taken with a large pinch of salt.
I'm interested in the new Sigma even if I own both the Zeiss ZE 35/1,4 and ZE 35/2 lenses. And if wonderful bokeh is important to you, the Zeiss 35/1,4 is way better than the Canon 35L. The Canon is not even close to the Zeiss when comparing the bokeh

I'm glad to see that the optical quality of the Sigma is so high. But I already wish the 35L, which I own and love, were lighter and more compact than it is. I'll probably end up with the new Canon 35/2 IS if it's as good as the Imatest suggests – not for the IS, but for the smaller weight and size.

Hi guys ... occasional lurker, first time poster. I've had the lens since Wednesday night... since it looks like there's some contention about processing in the samples Legion5 referenced, I have some sample shots up here: http://smu.gs/R40J1P
Taken with a 5Dc, all the shots are RAWs imported to LR and exported w/ default settings (WB "As Shot," "Adobe Standard" image profile, 25/1/25/0 sharpening, no NR, all other settings 0). Analyze away.
