The vignetting correction and Auto Lighting Optimzer probably caused that banding. I wish there was a way to permanently remove ALO and HTP from all my Canons and make vignetting correction default to off after a camera reset.
This is very good for ISO 6400 OOC JPEG but it could have been much better if shot raw and processed in ACR (6 or 7) or Lightroom (3 or 4). This is where ACR really shines. The added detail and lack of blotchiness kicks the crap out of Canon's processing, including DPP. With the 5D3 and ACR, you get a fine grained noise like scanned film. ISO 6400 - 12,800 reminds me of T-MAX 400, 16,000 to 25,600 like Fuji Superia 800.

I got Lightroom4 this weekend (big improvement from Lr3) and I agree. Noise is essentially non-existant with very good to excellent detail retention at ISO 6400 for most shots.
Incidentally, I got home and tried to recreate the previous shot with different exposures and wasn't able to reliably replicate the banding I saw, so I feel comfortable putting that issue to bed.
I have to share this shot - the sharpness, color, detail and lack of objectionable noise at ISO 6400 is impressive. I've never shot the d3s/d4, but I feel comfortable in saying that there aren't any cameras in this price range that could easily match the ISO performance from this camera (certainly not OOC Jpegs).

That is indeed excellent.
I can't compare it to my results, since now I shoot exclusively raw.
Nikon's jpegs leave a little to be desired when compared to canon's, so once I learned that I never shot jpeg again with the D3s.
But given the iso used, that result is truly impressive for a OOC file.
I was waiting for the price to get lower, but you are making it all the more difficult...
