p.1 #1 · Need books about flash portraiture techniques
I am starting to experiment with off camera speedlight portraits, both outdoors with natural light and in the studio. Bare lights, softboxes, umbrellas etc.
Looking for book suggestions that will get me pointed in the right direction to start learning how to go about all this.

You don't need a book - you need information in a form you can use. Open your scope to other media. A search engine is your friend and so are so many people here.
I'd recommend Chuck Gardner, who posts here as cgardner, but I see his helpful site is closed for repairs. He not only knows flash photography very well, he explains it so clearly and well.

Also check out Scott Kelby's free iPad/iPhone app called Light Recipes....he has 13 different lighting situations and how he handled them (not Speedlights per se, but many of the techniques could be handled with Speedlights).

I've gone through many books and blogs on lighting and I didn't really get it until I came across Zack Arias. If you learn best by listening and watching others demonstrate examples, then I suggest purchasing Zack Arias Studio Lighting course at CreativeLive.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned it so far but go to Strobist.com and go through the free Lighting 101 course. Then do Lighting 102.
As far as books go Joe McNally's most recent book Sketching Light has a great demo/how to component moreso than his last two lighting books IMO. His last two are also great though.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to offer suggestions, I spread some money around Amazon and since I have always enjoyed Mark Wallace, Creative Live.
Since I was inundated with helpful responses I believe I will be busy with this material for some time, my wife/model/guinea pig thank you also.
