p.1 #1 · Profoto Pro-7b Battery Re-Cell

Hey everyone, looking to re-cell one of my 7b batteries. Does anyone know what is the best way to do this? I'm pretty confident about doing it myself, seems pretty straightforward, but do you know if you can get the Lithium one and put it in a Pb cassette?

Also any sources on batteries only would be great

Never done it myself, but have had several re-celled by Profoto. It was only $85.00 last time for the original type of battery, and they turned it around quickly. Worth it to me to know that it's being done to spec.

I don't have Profoto packs, but from what I read they are just SLA (at least the old ones are). Remove the screws from the battery case, find out the capacity and report back so the others can use as a reference in the future. Seems to be pretty straight forward.

"SLA? "

Sealed lead acid. a battery technology from the 60s and 70s. It has a cell voltage of 2.2 VDC per cell, which means you can't re-cell with NiMH or LiON. Their cell voltages are too low.

The good news is that SLA batteries are cheap and reliable. Just not very environmentally friendly.

Reporting back, the battery used is a 12v 12Ah SLA battery. I found them at BatteriesPlus for $49.99 with free installation. 7b works like new again

BatteriesPlus installed the SLA for you?
Doesn't it involve soldering the terminals?

Yeah they installed it. They solder the wires onto the terminals.

Thanks for getting back to us! I swapped my Broncolor A2R packs 12V 12Ah SLA battery out for 4x3.3V LiFePO4 38120P cells, it works like a charm! Looks like this will work for the 7b too!

Hmm... does the charger still work? I have one left to re-cell maybe I'll try it.

Does anyone know what the size spec of the replacement SLA battery is? I’d like to order one on Amazon and just do the work myself.

Thanks for everyone adding to this post!

BatteriesPlus has 2 types of SLA 12v 12ah batteries, with 2 different terminals; F1 & F2. Do you know which one someone would need?

If anyone has walk through video /tutorial on installing/reselling a Prophpto 7b battery , that’ll be great

Just keeping the post updated. Batteries Plus still sells these batteries. For the ProPhoto 7b you do need, as mentioned above, SLA 12v 12Ah . For the Terminal Type, F1 or F2, it doesn’t seem to matter, the difference being the size of the terminal/the foot print on which to solder the wires. My second hand 7b had a non-original battery with F2 terminals, the wiring for mine was more frayed, so when I purchased my new battery I purchased an SLA with F2 terminals.

For difficulty, I would say very low. my Batteries Plus here in Rosemead, CA took care of the soldering for me in 10mins. The employee was even kind enough to work on the battery in front of me and give me tips in case I ever wanted to try it myself.( this same employee explained the differences for the terminals and suggested staying with the F2 type.)

My replacement battery cost 55$ before tax. I know MTO can recell your battery for you, but that’s ~80$ plus you gotta specially pack your battery for FedEx.

If you’re trying to save some money. You can def buy some SLA 12v 12Ah online for around 25$/30$ + 40$ for Solder & Tools and do this yourself in an evening

Thanks for this info. I tried to open my Pro-7B cartridge this afternoon to answer your questions, but don't have the needed hex driver. I did know that soldering is required, although that sounds pretty odd. The AcuteB also uses FASTON terminals (F2), and the whole idea is to attach the harness without soldering.

I swapped the batteries in my Acute b600 units with replacements from Amazon. The 7b was recelled by Salvino's in LA for $80 with shipping and functions as new.

Correction: I had the battery recelled at MTO, a previous AcuteB600 was worked on by Salvino's.

More importantly there are FR/HR vs. the regular drain batteries. The Fast Rate or High Rate batteries are designed for high current applications like UPS that may be >5C. If your device is drawing many C under load then FR/HR is better for performance and longevity. I don't know the details of the particular strobe and what current it draws during recycle so it may or may not matter very much, but should be considered. There are also 12V/14Ah Duracell (captive brand for Batteries+), but I don't recommend them for any but lower power applications and even so the slight improvement is not worth it.
