I prefer the color. I am just that type of guy. I took a shot at / played with the image just for fun. I actually prefer your. This is a blend of one psudo-HDR, one B&W, one High key, one low key and the original.
Oldrattler, you're re-work makes me search the image which is a good thing. Interesting processing technique but it works and because of it I have located an eye and possibly even a fish which were hiding before.

Great subject and obviously open to many interesting interpretations illustrated by our crew above. Both of your versions work for me, with a lean towards the color. I like Kent's highlighting the face the best, although a more subtle highlighting would work even better for me. I think it helps to be guided there while still leaving some sense of discovery for the viewer.
