Nikon has filed for a patent for a new 55-300 f/2.8-4 lens.

Anyone know how long it takes from the time a patent is filed until they actually hit the market? This could be the lens I'm looking for.

What is strange to me is that this patent features a DX focal range (55-300) but FX dimensions (image circle and a 25cm long lens).

How likely is it that Nikon posted a more general patent for what eventually could be a DX lens?

this has piqued my interest as well. Might be years away though. Might not ever hit store shelves.

on the other hand.... might this be announced with the long awaited d400? Might be a great compliment for sports shooters and an alternative to Sigma's 120-300 2.8

Odd focal length for FX. And if it ever gets made, this lens would be HEAVY.

Nikon has filed for dozens upon dozens of patents over recent years for lenses that have never and may never come to production. If such a lens comes one day, great, but I wouldn't hold out for something just because a patent was filed.
