What s'ware for sorting/rejecting/organizing into folders before processing in LR?
I did a search on the archives but was not sure what the conclusion was.... Breeze Downloader Pro? PhotoMechanic? Picasa?
I use LightRoom 4.2, Win 7, Canon RAW only, and shoot many many photos in one day. When I get home, I want to immediately delete the blurry/crappy shots and start organizing them into special folders. If I am shooting birds or whatever at a nature preserve, I want to sort and organize by species - sometimes by location etc... and do this by putting them into their respective folders. THEN, I will fire up LR and import each folder to then start processing.
I do not want to edit the RAWs before I get them into LR; I just want to sort/reject/file. That is all. I am using DPP for this task. I also have Picasa on my PC but do not use it for this task.
I find getting my RAWs into LR 4.2 impossibly slow (1:1) and once in, hell to reorganize. So, I am using Canon's DPP to "quick check" reject and organize. DPP's "quick check" feature works but is clumsy and DPP will allow me to drag and drop into folders. In short, DPP works for me but there has got to be something better out there.

I would learn to use Lightroom, really, I am not being sarky here.
If you want to delete images, then don’t import them. Instead of putting images in ‘special’ folders, just tag them with the terms that you want to search for them later. I don’t see why anyone would want to edit raw images before getting them into Lightroom. Lightroom is a raw image convertor, cataloger, and editor.

Thanx Brian, I guess I was not clear... I want to quickly go through the RAWs to know what I want to import and what I want to trash before I import. I agree with you, I should not import the crappy stuff.... that is why I want a pre-importer tool.
I just got back from shooting Eagles today, and I filled a 32 gig card and I know that at least 80% of what I shot is a blurred, crappy mess. I want to view these and delete them before they get into LR.

So why can’t you go through them in the LR import module, and uncheck the lot and then go through and check the ones you want to import. You can enlarge the thumbs. If the largest thumbs are large enough for vetting, then simply double click on the first image and go though each image individually (right arrow key will bring up the next, single click will zoom to one-to-one, check the import box for those you want).

Yep. WAY faster than culling in Lightroom. I set preferences to delete without prompting. bring up full screen on second monitor. press Z to zoom to check sharpness ( if needed) - Z again to full view. Press Delete to nuke and show next, or right arrow to keep and show next. Each click is near instantaneous display (vs. seconds in LR).
After done, import into LR.

Since you're shooting Canon and on PC I'd definitely suggest BreezeBrowser Pro (not Downloader Pro which is software for ingesting images).
Many pros use Photo Mechanic, and you'll no doubt get a number of suggestions to go in that direction, but BBPro has several advantages over Photo Mechanic in my opinion.
1. BBPro is based on Canon's SDK so its one of the very few third-party programs that can show the active focus point used (very handy when trying to judge critical focus).
2. You can use BBPro in full-screen slideshow mode to tag and cull, and when needed simply press CTRL+B to invoke the "View actual image" command - this enables you to see a rendering of the raw data rather than the JPEG preview embedded in the raw file. As far as I know PM cannot render raw data.
3. Again, since BBPro is based on Canon's SDK you can also do quick raw conversions that are accurate and use all the in-camera settings (i.e. it can replicate in-camera JPEGs). BBPro actually uses Raw Image Task which Canon included in older versions of ZoomBrowser EX but has since stopped supporting with version 6.4. If you do some research you'll find that in the opinion of many knowledgeable people RIT does better raw conversions than DPP.
PM can be configured so that Flags and Ratings can be transferred to Lightroom but BBPro has the same functionality. If I were to summarize I'd say that BBPro takes the best features of DPP, adds funtionality that isn't available in DPP, and packages it all into a much more user-friendly interface. For example, BBPro uses the Space bar to "quick check" images just like you would in DPP.
For those who don't understand why you'd cull and sort BEFORE importing into Lightroom, a browser based solution is substantially faster than waiting for files to be imported into a database and previews rendered.

Aperture is amazing at culling - and import speed is instant - it is faster to import, stack, cull and delete rejects with aperture than continuously look at a media card trying to decide what to import and what not to import.

And what Windows version of Aperture would you recommend?

I do not know it there are Mac versions think its only PC Windows.....
The Codec package will give you Thumbnails for PSD and RAW files in Windows dialogs and file explorer.
FastImageViewer let you quickly cull, rate and organize your image files before using Adobe programs like Lightroom, Bridge and Photoshop.
Thanks for reminding me about FPV; I use the codec package to view raw and PSD thumnails (and LR previews) in Windows Explorer but I forgot about the full FPV version.

Is Aperture now available for Windows?
The OP said the following: "I use LightRoom 4.2, Win 7, Canon RAW only" and " I also have Picasa on my PC"

You state in your OP that you find DPP "clumsy", but it is more than sufficient for culling shots that are a "blurred, crappy mess". I use DPP quick check routinely and it does the job quickly (hence the name!) and easily. You already have DPP, it's free -- why spend more money when a sufficient tool is already in your toolbox?
On the other hand, it seems that photo hobbyists -- especially the ones on this forum -- are engaged in one big economic stimulus plan, so if you feel you need to make another purchase to do this simple job, go ahead.

Even when it's slower it's so much easier to do everything in Lr. Import everything, perhaps into a folder called "unsorted" or similar, and then work on them at your leisure. If an exposure was poor and you need to tweak it to see if it is worth keeping then that effort will not be wasted should you decide to keep it.
More to the point, you know where all of your images are from the moment they hit the computer because Lr has them all.

+1
My workflow based upon a 700-1000 frame soccer match using breezebrowser:
- actually use downloader pro to take the photos off the card reader, rename them and put them in a standard location:
ex) \photo\soccer\2012\11\15\ Yes I know LR can do the rename but I don't want LR dealing with all 1000 frames, only the good ones
- downloader pro automatically closes and opens breezebrowser
- set BB so thumbnails are on left with larger single frame of selected thumb on right, make sure you turn on the "high quality" setting - does a very good job. Only need to do this once from then on BB opens this way.
- 1st pass, go thru the lot and flag all the no keepers (oof's etc...)
- select all flagged and hit delete
- 2nd pass, go thru and flag potentials I want to import to LR
- select all flagged, right click and pick "move to folder" - you can either select the folder you want or create one, then execute
- open LR and import the folder
Now just the "potential keepers" are in LR. If I find later some of the selection are not worthy I use the "delete from disk" via LR.

Why is the preview tool in DPP an issue. I use it for weddings and love it. Free & fast. I have found it faster than pretty much everything else on the market at: previewing, marking rejections, selecting rejections, deleting rejections, renaming and sorting. I actually have most of those actions tied to a G13. Makes it super-fast. Even by mouse and keys, I don't see the issue. (?)

I am also a big fan of breezebrowzer on my pc. Now that I switched to a mac that's the only software I miss. Photomechanic is great also but its twice the price.
