Spent about 5 hours around sunrise at Haleakala on Mau'i last month during our vacation.

Managed to get some decent shots despite the lighting being very very challenging!

D800 + a variety of MF and AF Nikkors.

Here's a low resolution pano from just before sunrise from the same spot.
Needs some more post-processing in the highlights, but it's not too bad.

8 images using my 105/2.5 AIS at f/5.6 ISO 100 on my D800

Unfortunately no, we did not get to it. This is our second time to Maui, perhaps on our third trip we'll make it.

As it was, I couldn't get anyone interested in getting up at 2:30am to get to the top by 5am due to the 2hr car ride.

I got there about 1/2 hour before the sun came up and there were about 30 people there when the sun finally came. 15 minutes later 3/4 of them were gone and an hour later there were only a handful. As soon as the sun came up everyone took off!

I was glad I stayed for a couple of hours (4 all together actually).

I plan on going back and staying all day.
