wow - its probably been 3 weeks since i put any photos up. what with a busy work schedule and the crappy weather due to sandy, i've not been able to get out at all recently.
i did make it out for a while today and found these guys. they sit WAAAAYYYYY up in the tops of pine trees eating cones but a few came into reach. these use their crossed bill to get extra leverage as they pry open pine cones to extract the seeds.
gonna be an invasion year for these and other northern finches!
Beautiful shots. These make me particularly green because they are one of the few North American bird species that I haven’t photographed yet. Great work! Glad you made it through Sandy OK.
They may have stayed out of range most of the time, but when they perched in shorter trees, you really nailed the shots.
