how about switching back to Canon due to their "super light" 600 IS II?
Yeah, but what do you shoot it with? The 1D4? The 5DIII?
My D800+500VR wipes the floor with either of those combinations.
Maybe, except in the AF speed/accuracy and lens sharpness departments... and who ever heard of buying a camera and lens to wipe floors with anyway?
Having just switched from 1DsIII and 1DIV with Canon 500IS, 600IS and 800IS to the D800E and the 500mm VR I can state that for BIF the Nikon set up has faster and more reliable acquisition, and better tracking than the Canons did. I would love to have an 8.5lb 600mm VR, but I don't miss Canon focus on BIF. I do miss it on hand held macro where Canon was better than Nikon on tracking wind sway.
Just got mine yesterday. So far it's probably going to be to slow for action and the difference between the fps to D700 is noticeable.
Was tired if my D700. Market now is about $1,500. So that offset the extra 1.5k for the D800.
I like how you don't have to remove battery cover when using the grip which adds the heft I prefer in my hand.
As far as the MP depth. No opinion. Not much of a priority for me, nice to have.
I transplanted the eye cup from the D800. May consider the view mag accessory.
D600 has the DX form factor, which is too impeding manually holding it.
I usually shoot with too bodies, and will adjust from the D3s to D800 as shooting speed requires.
Will be shooting some studio shots today to see whats up there.
Note, dual memory card feature a plus. Opens up use of new transcend sd wi-fi card for idevice collaboration.
Curious to see how the dual USB/hdmi port performs with tethered captures.
Nonetheless, market value insists on upgrading from aging D700 to the newer model for future liquidation/upgrades as may be considered.
Next will be which model replaces my D3s. That will be a more thoughtful investment in terms of DR performance and fps speed.

I appreciate your comments, Bill. I only have experience shooting the 1D4 with the 800L, and have no experience with Canon's 500IS or 600IS (f4) so that is interesting.
But just to be fair, the 1D4's AF is not in in the same league as the 5DIII, 1Dx, D800 or D4. The 1D4's AF is definitely "last generation" in comparison.
And I don't mean to nit-pic, but 500VR has current generation VRII. There never was a VR I.

I have a D800 that I will sell eventually. Right now I have both 800 and 800E. I bought the 800 while waiting for the 800E as there was not clear timing on the 800E and wanted 2 Nikon bodies anyway in my switch from Canon back to Nikon.
I will sell or trade my D800 if/when - D300 replacement comes out and offers over 16MP with good IQ and frame rate better than crop mode on D800. 20MP at 8FPS would be ideal, or I can get a great trade for a D4 with someone local who wants the resolution of a D800 for their work and doesn't need the frame rate.
I would not sell the D800E - outstanding landscape camera!!

Come on Trench! You need to take your camera out more I have 22,183 reasons why I wanna keep my D800. I have 5 other's and need to be fair...they ALL make me $$
I've bought a D4; however, I'm deciding whether or not to sell the D800E. My hands are too big to comfortably use the D800--been using the pro bodies too long I guess. Also, the ergonomics of the D4 are outstanding. All the funky things of previous pro bodies are gone.
