p.1 #1 · 5D Mark 3 LCD preview question.

Immediately after taking a shot with the 5 D Mark 3 I look at the LCD to review the image. I have the LCD preview set for 3 seconds. When I look at the image it looks kind of like a dull RAW file. Perfectly exposed but the LCD preview shows a flat, dull image. Then if I hit play to view the image again.....sometimes it looks the same dull way.......other times it looks snappy and brilliant just like it should. It is not that one image is flat because of the scene. I can take side by side duplicate photos of a landscape for example and when reviewing the image on the LCD it will sometimes look flat and dull.....other times look vivid and crisp (the way it should look).

I don't know why that happens. I looked at the manual but could not find the reason for this. I am sure it's something easy or that I overlooked.

Anyone know what the deal is with this?

The LCD preview is set to auto brightness btw.

Thank you.

This is just a guess, but do you have the LCD set to auto-brightness? At least on my 5D mkII, you can let the camera adjust the screen brightness according to the ambient lighting. Perhaps that
ambient lighting level sensor is getting fooled now and then.

Other possibility: Maybe there are two qualities of preview JPG stored in the raw file, and if you
need to display in a hurry it uses the small one, otherwise it uses the larger one. [This is just
wild speculation on my part.]

On an unrelated note: How did you do during the big storm, Tom?

I made out ok in the hurricane. Lost power for 6 hours. No damage to house or property. I feel very lucky.
