It's also worth looking at the Tamron 17-50/2.8 as a better quality standard range zoom. The older, non-VC version is sharper than the new VC version and can be found used for $300 or so. This is one of the best zooms you can get for a crop camera short of coughing up the money for the Canon 17-55/2.8 or Canon L glass.
