Canon rumours says that a 24-70 f4 IS is coming. Not a 2.8. They say it's a cr3 ie going to happen (although I never believe it until I see it).
I presume it will produce better quality than the 24-105 and be a great high quality lens, maybe for high MP studio / landscape photographers? It might also explain why the 2.8 was so biased towards performance at the 2.8 end. It is exceptional at 2.8 but only "fantastic" at f4+?.
I would be extremely surprised if another 24-70 came out .
I can however see a new version of the 24-105L sometime soon . In fact I was surprised they didn't do a new version when the 5D3 released .
Despite the fact that Canon seems to be doing their fare amount of shock and awe (not in the good way), I'm still gonna say I don't buy into this. Aside from weight loss, having f/4 in this zoom range gives you the additional reach of 105mm and is worth it to the people who bought into the 24-105 for that reason. Canon desperately needs to come out with the 24-70 2.8L IS. If they're seriously skipping that and doing the f/4 route, there's a ton of people (mostly videographers) who are going to buy the Tamron version. 2.8 with IS is where it's at with zooms in today's professional market.
They've done pretty well in my book, even if just raising awareness (although I've never expected them to be spot on, but they have been on numerous occasions). Name other sources that even give you an inkling of what's coming a month out.

It still makes me chuckle that people actually take this garbage website CR seriously.

Presumably smaller and cheaper (hopefully) than the 24-105L, this rumored lens will likely be a new kit option for the 6D.
Yes, I'd be interested - if it's cheaper than the 24-105L.
I hope it is more expensive than the 24-105, maybe $1400. However, I would settle for a range of 24-85 if optics wer not compromised much. My 24-105 is not used much lately due to the limited IQ especially at 24.
I'd speculate that Canon wants to sell a 6D kit with this lens for $2500 or less.
So, this rumored 24-70/4L will have to be cheaper than the 24-105/4L.
Quality could be be good - but how good, considering the relatively low price that this lens needs to have.
Nikon has the AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR, widely seen as a cheap full-frame kit lens for the D600 – where ‘cheap’ these days is 600 bucks on the nose.
It makes perfect sense for Canon to offer something similar for the EOS 6D.
And it would be in character for Canon to offer a neat and tidy constant-aperture lens to go against yet another tacky f/3.5-x.x Nikkor* zoom. Canon wouldn’t even need to get the price down to $600 then, though I suspect it will be close anyway.
* The Nikkor brand really is worthless today, since it’s plastered on any old piece of junk. How the mighty have fallen! Nikon still makes great lenses of course, but the Nikkor label no longer tells you that.
I agree with jorkata, though he thinks three minutes quicker than I do.
As for quality, the optics will be fine, I’m certain, though nothing like the imperious f/2.8 that Canon just released. It’s the mechanics that will be cheap, to reach the low target price, and because infrequent use by hobbyists for just a few years is the expected mode of use. This is rational, but I hate the disposable nature of it all.
Anyway, I should quit moaning before Canon even releases the lens. Maybe it will surprise me. The constant f/4 aperture is a great start.
Every time a rumour site posts a rumour people come out of the woodwork to say it’ll never happen. Fair enough, since most of the ‘rumours’ are obviously pie-in-the-sky dreaming, probably to drive traffic.
I don’t follow the rumour sites directly, since anything of value gets filtered out of the muck by others more diligent than me, like PhilDrinkwater in this case.
And this particular rumour has a clear ring of authenticity to it. The rumoured lens would fit neatly into a gigantic puzzle of marketing and engineering considerations.
