p.3 #1 · Canon 40D stuck in Portrait mode, can't make any changes.

I heard back from Canon and they want $224 for the repair. They don't list any parts, just a standard repair charge.

Do you know what prompted the problem??

Hi,
I bought it in this condition. I was told by the seller , he loaded new 1.1.1 firmware on it and it came out in this condition.
I only paid $190 for it and a canon 28-200 mm usm lens. So I figured the lens is probably worth what I paid. But now it might be only a $224 fix, so it would probably be worth it. Except it has a 86K shutter count. ( old studio camera I suppose) I may ask for two quotes , one just to make it operational, and just wait for the shutter to die, and one for the shutter and the fix.
The camera looks brand new so it might worth it to get both done.
I heard from someone that if you try to load the 1.1.1 over a firmware that had and was in restricted mode. It could cause what we are seeing. This could be what happened.
Thank you for the info,
Jeff

Maybe I just have gotten lazy, or I'm sending gear to CPS for clean/inspection too much, but if I need a firmware update, I just wait until the next scheduled cleaning, and have Canon do it.

If something goes wrong, and the software "goes zombie" well, the Canon tech can deal with it.

There are some more specialist sites out there dedicated to hacking cameras.....you might be better off hunting them down and asking for suggestions....they probably have as much expertise as Canon technicians.

Also......why not approach some independent repair companies for an opinion / quote!?

I did ask a local repair shop that said they would have to send it to canon.
Can someone give me the names of two or three independents that may be able to restore the firmware in house to a working version of 1.1.1?
I just don't want to send it to a shop and then they send it to canon and mark up the repair.

I have used these folks in the past with good results.

I know this thread is a little old, but I can tell you what is wrong with the camera. I have no idea how to fix it however without the password.

The camera most likely came from a chain portrait studio. The Canon 40D with the 28-200 USM lens was pretty standard at Picture Me studios and I'm sure many others. The camera has custom software that locks any user out of changing any of the settings. The exposure is set at 1/100 and F14 with no way to adjust anything. The password would need to be entered to get it out of restricted mode and I do not have access to it.

I have tried upgrading the firmware (the camera contains version 1.0.8) to 1.1.1 by connecting using the EOS utility, but it did not remove the restricted mode. As far as I know these are bricks unless they can be reprogrammed by Canon.

I've had experience with this EXACT same scenario. Canon 40D, Restricted Mode, all of the above. But my story is even better, because the camera I came across still had the thin metal ring between the lens and body that prevents you from depressing the button to remove the lens. Mounted was a 28-200mm Canon lens.

It was a shady Craigslist seller, and I can guarantee that the camera I looked at was STOLEN from a retail store. (As suggested above) The only fix is sending it in to Canon and having them reprogram it (well, actually they claimed they need to replace the board). $224 sounds about right.
