I'm selling my 2011 Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 lens, and a person interested in the lens has asked me if it's all metal. Mine has a metal mount but plastic body.
The potential buyer claims the "new" 50mm f/1.4's are all metal. Is this true? I follow Canon rumors and other sites daily, and I've never heard of a new all-metal 1.4...

You won't find a single Canon EOS lens of any age that isn't made mostly of plastic (except for the glass). If you want metal, buy Zeiss, Leica, etc. and pay $$$ for it.

The original 50 1.8 had a metal mount and was better built than the "new" 50 1.8 that is all plastic. That is what the person is probably talking about.

Most of the great white L tele primes are metal with some plastic trim and switches.

Really? you might want to check the 70-200 2.8's, 300 f4, 400 f5.6's and the supertele's..90-95% metal. Last i checked.

Thanks for the info! I'm glad to know I wasn't crazy for doubting the existence of a new, all-metal 50. (Though it'd be great if Canon would make one!)

You got me on that one. My biggest are the 300/4L IS and 70-200/4L IS, and I'm not sure how much of their bodies isn't plastic, but all the smaller stuff I have sure is.
