f/8 focus huh? Well that drops the value of the 1Dmk4 through the floor! Reach, reach it's all about the reach
Not really; 1D IV has 26% more reach when FL limited and has always been able to do AF at f/8 so will always have a 26% advantage. It just makes the 1D X's low pixel density a bit less suck worthy. It's great news if you can afford an 800L though.

Is this actually true; sounds like a fan bois wish list and too good to be true, especially given the detail Canon went into to tell us AF at f/8 was not possible. Can't find the article on that site. Can't find it mentioned anywhere.

However, 1DX has about 50% more reach due to superior AF, and 200% more reach due to superior high ISO handling, and 20% more reach due to super fast frame rate....all that simply translates into a clear fact that 1DX is significantly more effective wildlife camera than the whole old lot, 1DMkIV included.

Well, I'm shootin' 1DX and 1DIV, and I'm starting to think along the same lines...
What's the odds that I can get $6k for a near mint 1DIV?

Wow. I wonder how many folks who switched to Nikon over the F/8 AF issue now wish they hadn't?
I would really like the AF illumination on my 5DIII. There are work a rounds of course, but it would be nice. I doubt that there will be F/8 AF though. As stated, its a point of differentiation for 1 series bodies. On top of that, where the 1DX was made to work at F8 in some tests with taped pins or 3rd party TCs, the 5DIII did not work. So something else could be different.

However, not since the EOS-3 has there been a non 1 series camera with the same AF as the pro model. They have gone the extra mile by giving us almost the same AF as the 1D X (sans the colour metering) so I won't rule out them giving the 5d III AF at f/8 except on technical differences that preclude it.

I'm not sure if anyone switched because of the f/8 issue. The f/8 issue mostly affects those with 500/600 f/4 and 800f/5.6 that want to use TCs. That would mean selling and buying some expensive lenses just to switch and the 1D4 is still a great camera (and was used by most people with these lenses).

Also don't know if anyone ACTUALLY switched...but boy did everyone threaten to.

Pretty sure I have read that the 5D3 works very well with taped pins or 3rd party TC's.
I remember an article linked to on Canonrumors about getting the 1Dx to work. The guy who did the testing specifically stated he tried the same thing with his 5dIII, and had no luck. Here is the link
There is a place where he says: "I finally got my 1DX from Canon through the Explorers of Light program on Tuesday and promptly headed out to the East Pond at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge that afternoon. As I was gathering my gear I noticed the the Kenko Teleplus PRO 300 DGX 1.4x AF Teleconverter, in my ThinkTank Airport SecurityTM V2.0 rolling bag. I grabbed it and mounted it between the 800 and my new camera body. Based on my experience with the 5D III I assumed that the 1DX would not focus with the TC in place. Again, the 1DX, by design, focuses only to f/5.6."
I just filed that away in my mind, hence my comment above. Not comprehensive testing for sure. And since i don't have any need for anything longer, I didn't look further in to it.
