What?!? I thought NO ONE with a 7D complained about these issues. I thought that the AF worked just fine on the 7D and only a select few 5D Mark III and 1D X whiners had a problem. Hmmm.
7D AF is fine for me. I've never had problems seeing the AF points. However, the rectangles are larger and fill up proportionally more of the screen in a crop camera, so visibility should be better.

Ahhh man, after going to all the trouble to source a nice used 1D4 for this very purpose, now Canon adds it to the 1DX. I may have considered going 1DX instead if I knew this was coming. (referring to the f/8 more than the AF illumination)
Oh well, the 1.3 crop will come in handy anyways and the way the 1D4 lights up its points will still be better than this modified system on the 1DX which only solves one of the complaints towards the AF illumination. I do hope for at least the AF point update for the 5D3 but I don't think Canon will do the f/8 update on the 5D3 as it has never had this on non-1 series before.

Umm, EOS-3?
I stand corrected, but I still don't see them adding it to the 5D3 as it has been a 1 series trend since the digital age. But I wait to be proven wrong and would welcome it to my 5D3.
Now has anyone downloaded this yet and tried it out??

Perhaps the 5d3 will get these updates.
There is no chance that the 5D3 -- or any other non-1 series camera -- will ever get the AF at f/8 capability. Canon will keep that a 1-series feature, just as they did with the 1DIV. It's pure marketing -- they're going to do everything they can to avoid cutting into sales of their flagship DSLRs.

Yea, probably true, but what about Magic Lantern turning a trick for the 5D3 on this

This is great news. I have no more excuses for not getting this camera. Umm, wait sec.
This is only for AI servo?? Not one shot? I need to read more on this, why wouldn't it also be on single point focus?
"To preserve exposure-metering accuracy, illumination is intermittent, not continuous."
Does this mean having a RED illuminated focus point will screw up the camera metering?

It is on single point - do you mean one shot? I noted this above. I find it strange too.. it's like they've provided about half a fix.

But AF illumination already works for One Shot. What do you mean?
If I'm on one shot at a wedding, in the dark, I can't see the AF point of where it is by looking through the viewfinder, so I can't see what I'm focussing on. If I move the point, it is red for a moment, or if I achieve focus it flashes red too.

Isn't that what happens for you?
Ah, I understand what you mean now. Sorry. Yes, it only flashes red for a moment when it acquires focus (in One Shot).
Just getting the same functionality in AI Servo is a big help, but I can see why it would be nice to have the active focus dimly lit all the time.

So having an illuminated, easy-to-see AF point is well enough for wildlife and sports photographers who have > $6000 for a camera body, not good enough for a wedding photographer? Makes no sense.
Also, cameras have traditionally improved from model to model. And given that EVERY xxD model, every 5D model, every 1D and 1Ds model before it had this feature, it's not good enough for Canon to offer this fix to 5D users, many of whom had become accustomed to this feature? For the sake of Canon let's hope they don't draw the same conclusion you did. If so, they are shooting themselves in the foot and I will personally cease any loyalty I once had to this company.

Yes, wonder exactly what it will do. Having it lit all the time is what you want so you can see in advance. I guess you can just remember where it is or keep it half pressed all the time. I dunno...will have to use it to see what the real-world application is. In the mail now, looking foward to test-driving it soon.

I still think the new viewfinder was a massive mistake from Canon. You can't see the focus confirmation in good light and you can't see the focus point at all in poor light.
Does no one there actually *use* their products?
A shame this ever happened. Also a further shame that they've provided what I personally see as a half solution I would normally never use AI servo in poor light as I don't consider it accurate enough so I'm stuck between being able to see the focus point now and having accurate focus.
Thanks Canon
(not being ungrateful, I just wonder at decisions people make sometimes...)

This is interesting:
"If AF point expansion is selected with an f/8 maximum aperture lens/extender combination, the four AF points surrounding the center point will act as AF Assist points"
It would appear that they couldn't make it accurate / reliable enough to focus at f8 without the extra points to help out.
