p.1 #1 · SB-27 flash, D700, and sync cord?

I’m just now learning to use strobes creatively, and I have question about my fifteen year old SB-27 flash.

It seems a bit conspicuous that Nikon does not manufacture a long sync cord other than the three pin multi-flash model, but Impact makes one that’s 6 feet in length. Would there be any harm, or more likely a failure to work properly, connecting the SB-27 to the D700 with a long, third-party sync cord?

Additionally, I realize that electrolytic capacitors naturally degrade over time--is that going to be a problem for the SB-27?

Thanks!

If you are talking about the simple PC Sync cord, any cord will do. You should be able to get cords that are 10'+.

Only way to see if the SB27 will work properly is to try it.

After some online searching, I'm even more confused. As far as I can tell, both the flash and camera have FEMALE sync terminals, but the longest MALE-MALE sync cord I find is Nikon's three-footer, the SC-15.

Am I doing something wrong, because I'm finding that every other type/gender permutation under the sun is available in any length I could want!

Hi Frank,
a cord like this one should work.
Similar cords should be available from other sources too.
Regarding your second question: If your SB-27 works fine in manual and automatic mode without very long recharging times it should be okay for your intended use.
Happy strobisting, Georg!

Thanks guys!

(update)

Assuming it works, this looks to be perfect for my application:
